Some memories cannot be erased with the stroke of a sponge. The former Tottenham captain knows something about it, Hugo Lloriswho recently launched a harsh attack on the club president Daniel Levy in his new autobiography. In his new book, ‘Hugo Lloris: Earning my Spurs’, in fact the French goalkeeper did not hesitate in telling an episode that marked him a lot after 11 and a half years of career spent with the shirt of the Spurs before landing in MLS.
Lloris failed to win a single trophy during his time at Tottenham, with two defeats in the Carabao Cup final and a debacle in the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2018-19. A torment for Lloris, who however revealed a backstory that happened before the match: “Four days before the final, Daniel Levy called us all together to announce that, thanks to the support of a sponsor, we would receive a luxury aviator watch from the club. At first we were thrilled to see the elegant boxes. Then we opened them and we discovered that he had had the player’s name and “Champions League Finalist 2019” engraved on the back of each watch.
A disappointment. “‘Finalist'”, the goalkeeper repeats. “Who does that at a time like this? I’m still not over it, and I’m not the only one. If we had won, he wouldn’t have asked to bring back the watches engraved ‘Winner’. I have considerable respect and respect for this man and everything he did for the club as president – I got to know him – but there are things he is simply not sensitive to. As magnificent as the watch is, I have never worn it. I would have preferred there to be nothing. With an engraving of the Like, Levy wouldn’t have been surprised if we were 1-0 down after a couple of minutes.” In the end, Spurs were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool, seeing the Champions League snatched from under their noses.
