Francesco Totti returns to play in Serie A? Provocation or not, the statements of the former Roma captain caused a sensation, opening a door that seemed, logically, to have been closed in 2017. At forty-eight years old the person concerned declared: “In life, never say never. I’m already there. There have been players in the past who have come back to play after a few years. I have to train well. Some Serie A teams have approached me recently. It happened a month ago and they made me feel a little crazy , a few thoughts I said: why after so many years do they still ask me?
Totti then released other statements: “Call from Lazio? I wouldn’t even have taken it into consideration. It’s just talk, it’s meant to be a joke, but 2-3 months and I’d be ready. So many things are said. After so many years, something means… I still play at 48 years: half an hour, twenty minutes. If I had to do something crazy I would do it in Italy, not abroad, but it’s crazy. Maybe Inter will call me… Let’s change the dressing room, I’ll bring the Chinese.”
In another passage the former Roma number 10 made it clear that he had not fully digested the retirement: “When you turn the page, let it never be what awaits you. It wasn’t my choice: it’s true that there is a beginning and an end for everything, but I didn’t want it and so that window remained open. A 10 in Italy? He’s not there, he could come back…”.
A simple joke or a real possibility? It’s difficult to say now, even if a return to the field, especially in Serie A, would be as sensational as it is unlikely. But in life, never say never, as Francesco Totti himself said, which nevertheless sparked a lot of curiosity.
