Illegally filmed sexual intercourse, footballer Hwang Ui-jo risks 4 years in prison

(ANSA-AFP) – SEOUL, OCTOBER 17 – South Korean footballer Hwang Ui-jo risks four years in prison after pleading guilty in court to illegally filming sexual encounters. The former Bordeaux and Nottingham Forest striker, 32, admitted a charge of recording himself, without their consent, having sex with women. Hwang, who now plays for Turkish club Alanyaspor, initially maintained his innocence before admitting the facts. “I sincerely apologize to the victims who suffered from my misdeeds. I sincerely ask for maximum leniency,” Hwang told the court. The scandal erupted in June 2023, when the player’s sister-in-law posted explicit private videos of Hwang online in an attempt to blackmail him.

He is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for blackmail. Hwang has been suspended from the national team since last November, after the matter came to light. He scored 19 goals in 62 appearances for South Korea. The ruling is expected on December 18. (ANSA-AFP).
