D’Aversa: “The referees must train with the teams and direct our matches”

Among the many topics covered by Roberto D’Aversa in his interview given to Corriere dello Sport there is also that relating to referees and in particular to VAR. The Empoli coach in fact spoke about technology in football, explaining his point of view: “The statistics say that the VAR has reduced errors, but it is a problem if the referee goes onto the pitch and waits for the intervention by the VAR”.

How can the difference in judgment on the same episode be reduced and perhaps eliminated?
“The referees must be given the opportunity to go and train with the teams. For example, if the referee is from Florence or Empoli, he could direct our matches or those of the Viola: you improve that aspect by living on the pitch every day and the dynamics of the players”.

Do you think you deserve a big name in our football?
“Everyone has ambitions and I am no exception, but at this moment I have to reciprocate Empoli’s trust together with all my staff who are fundamental for me: then ambition remains in my head.”

What do you think about building from the ground up?
“It’s right that it should be done if the conditions are right, otherwise it’s better to avoid it, but it’s a discussion that starts from afar and we need to work on it right from the training camp, intervening in the technical-tactical details and in the players’ conviction. Basically, when you meet teams that attack , we have to be good at avoiding pressure by balancing the presence of the opponents in our half of the pitch with ours in theirs.”
