Diarra case, FIFA comments: “We are satisfied, legality of the transfers reconfirmed”

The Court of Justice of the European Union issued this morning a historic ruling on the case Lassana Diarrathe former Real Madrid and Chelsea player who had his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow terminated without “just cause” in 2014 and was sentenced by FIFA to compensate the Russian club with 20 million plus 10.5 in damages.

In 2014 he was unable to sign for the Belgians Charleroi because FIFA denied him this possibility, given the dispute with Lokomotiv, but today a ruling has arrived which could be as historic as the one that led to the famous Bosman law and which could cause an upheaval for all clubs, which should thus grant players the power to terminate their contracts at any time, demolishing the structure on which the current transfer market is based. The response from FIFA arrived a little while ago, expressing – contrary to what one might expect – satisfaction: “FIFA has taken note of the sentence issued today by the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the case of the player Lassana Diarra .

FIFA is satisfied that the legality of the key principles of the transfer system has been reconfirmed by today’s ruling. The ruling calls into question only two paragraphs of two articles of the FIFA Regulations on the status and transfer of players, which the national court is now invited to consider. FIFA will analyze the decision in coordination with other interested parties before commenting further.”
