No extension, yes new signings: FIFA changes the market. Inter: 7 expiring, Acerbi or De Vrij?

The summer market will be open, for the federations that decide to do so, from 1 to 10 June 2025. A mess to unravel, at least in part, the mess of a Club World Cup: at least for now, it creates more problems than anything else. This is the innovation launched yesterday by FIFA, with the aim of helping the clubs participating in the competition. Furthermore, again with a view to managing any departures of players whose contracts expire on 30 June – i.e. halfway through the competition – there will also be the possibility of replacing the players called up with new purchases. The result? Dude could start with one team and end up with the other. Who knows, maybe challenge her in the final.

It’s easy to imagine that the FIGC will adhere to the news: it’s hard to see why not. The Italian companies involved, as readers will remember, are Inter And Juventus. The issue remains of the possibility of signing “short” contract extensions, which cover the time necessary for the World Cup or in any case until July 30th. FIFA could not provide for an automatic exemption on a topic left to the negotiating autonomy of clubs and players, but it did not even expressly mention this possibility.

In the case of the Nerazzurri, the issue will mainly concern defence. More than anything, it will be about anticipating a choice that seems inevitable. To date, there are seven Inter players whose contracts expire on 30 June 2025. However, Dumfries has renewed, all that is missing is the official status. Radu and Correa, vice versa, will leave without any doubt. In the case of Darmian there is the option for annual renewal, which should be exercised. Di Gennaro, third goalkeeper, is a secondary theme. Of the seven, the first thorn concerns Marko Arnautovic: he is the fourth striker and we could even do without him, but we will have to see how Simone Inzaghi’s other attackers arrive at the end of the season. More central is the planning choice regarding Acerbi and De Vrij: the possibility for Inter to exercise the option to renew also hangs over the Dutchman. On the one hand, it is difficult to imagine that the coach would agree to play a competition without the two references of his defense, who are also a fundamental part of the nucleus that gained access. On the other hand, it is also unlikely – especially with the current ownership – to renew both, even just for a further season: De Vrij will be 33 years old, Acerbi 37, at least one addition is already in the pipeline in the department. At best it will be a matter of choosing. One, the other, or maybe none.
