Former Cagliari footballer died in hotel, final farewell tomorrow

(ANSA) – CAGLIARI, 03 OCT – The funeral of Andrea Capone, the 43-year-old former Cagliari football midfielder, who died last Sunday in the suite of the Palazzo hotel, will take place tomorrow at 3pm in the church of the Santissimo Crocifisso in the Generuxi district Tirso of the capital, where he had spent the night. The prosecutor’s office has opened a case against unknown persons with the hypothesis of the crime of failure to provide assistance: a necessary act to proceed with the autopsy and to understand whether someone could have helped the 43-year-old, reporting his possible illness before the tragedy and the discovery of the body. In the meantime, new details have been learned about the autopsy carried out yesterday at the Brotzu hospital and which lasted about three hours. The latest rumors attribute Capone’s death to an illness that then caused him to fall down the steep stairs of the hotel room he occupied. The causes of his death are not yet known, but from what we have learned, the former footballer’s health conditions have not been good in recent times, and this would have led him to undergo a series of visits and medical checks. According to the police reconstruction, on the night between Saturday and Sunday, Capone had attended a party for the baptism of a friend’s son and had ended the evening in a club in the Su Siccu marina area together with other guests.

Then, since he couldn’t find the house keys, he was offered to sleep in the suite of Palazzo Tirso. The flying squad viewed the footage from the hotel cameras, where the friends could clearly be seen accompanying the 43-year-old to his room and then leaving. During the night the illness and the attempt to go down the stairs to reach the lower floor of the room, perhaps to ask for help. The body was discovered around 11am on Sunday morning by hotel staff.
