How is the team doing after the national teams?
“The team worked well, the guys who stayed worked and we put in a lot of work. We slowly reintegrated the internationals, even if some of them travelled a lot it is always gratifying to go to the national team. I think that the enthusiasm of having participated with the national team gives us the chance to be ready like the others. The team has come together in the last few days but has done a good job”.
What emotions do you feel in facing and reuniting with Verona?
“A healthy Verona is coming, with great physical condition and who have achieved important results with great performances. We know the difficulties of the match, but the team is prepared. I know the boys, it will be a difficult match for us. I start from the assumption that when you know you have given everything, maybe even a little more, you are left with the beauty of the experience, but in football you have to turn the page and we will have to play a very high level match”.
What does it take to beat Verona?
“The team has to play the best possible game and that’s what I expect. We’ve had a week and a half of work and I expect a top-level performance, giving continuity to the second half against Milan. We have to start from there, to do what we want there must be no setbacks in terms of performance. To do this we need the best possible game.”
Is there a Provedel-Mandas duel?
“I don’t know who brought up this topic, but it’s a non-issue. We have two strong goalkeepers, Provedel is the starter and he enjoys the trust of me and the whole team. He is a top-level professional and there are no problems. The good fortune is to have another young and very good guy like Mandas who has the future ahead of him, but I always love, especially in that role, not to question the hierarchies”.
Is the team improving in terms of balance?
“I’m happy that some situations are being noticed, but I’ve always told you that I start from the goal. This team must score goals and must find offensive production, we are working on the balance and I am convinced that it is not a problem of how many offensive players we have on the pitch. The important thing is to run and sacrifice, I prefer to always have one more offensive player on the pitch”.
Can you explain Castrovilli’s exclusion from Europe? Can Dele Bashiru play as a midfielder?
“I made the choice of Castrovilli by sharing it with the boy. Gaetano is a talent, one of the best Italian players but he is recovering from a long injury and only played five games last year. We have undertaken a journey with him, he is fine and this is important. We have decided to remove five games because then from January we can reopen the list. This first half of the season is useful for him to physically and technically find his maximum level. Dele must become a midfielder, he has the qualities to become a player who can boast both the physical part, fundamental in an active football like today’s, and the technical part. He can play this role, by dropping back he has the possibility of having this physical exuberance in the possession phase and we can find the conditions to attack and exploit his characteristics with his vertical running. I don’t like blocked midfielders, we are working on tailoring this role to him”.
How do you explain these difficulties in starting the race?
“This is something that pisses me off and the team knows it. For me the five substitutions are fundamental and I want them to have an impact to make the difference. They have to do well and whoever comes in later is paradoxically more important than whoever leaves. The mechanism of starters and reserves needs to be changed”.
What role does Noslin have in this Lazio?
“I don’t like static players, I like players who can vary and Noslin scored goals in all positions last year. It’s clear that he has to play with lightheartedness, I re-watched the match against Milan and you could see the pressure on some of the guys. We all have to grow together, Noslin can play in all three roles in attack and also under the striker, then during the week I move the players because they have to understand how to move in the various areas of the pitch”.
Did he work on the management of the match that was missing in the match against Milan?
“The team created a lot even after the 2-2, I can’t give the message to the team to drop back and manage. This mentality must be broken, if I’m under attack, if I’m ahead I defend. No, the team must go strong and have rhythm regardless of the result. This leads you to have a mentality that doesn’t change based on the result. How is Gila? When will Gigot be able to return to the field?
“Gigot is slightly behind physically because he was working separately at Olympique. It’s not a problem of condition, he has personality and experience and this is not a problem. Gila is fine, not well, I have to think about it because he is a key player for us and I have to evaluate how he is after this double injury. He is fine and ready”.
How did you find Castellanos after the national team?
“Happy, he was very happy. It is clear that the first day after the trip he did not work, but for me he is a certainty because he has energy and desire. On the pitch he spends and does not spare, he is a player I want on the pitch in every match”.
Can Tavares be managed in view of the next races?
“It is essential to have a left-footed full-back, he must push forward and get to the end. The wingers can play with an inverted foot, but the full-backs cannot. We have recovered Luca and I expect him to grow significantly, he must be more confident and more present in the games.
