Fabio Macellari, the forgotten face of Lippi’s Inter. First excellent with Cagliari

What is the memory that can be had of Fabio Macellari? Basically, there are two: the full-back who managed to cause problems for defenses against Cagliari, in a sort of archetype of the double phase, defensive and offensive. Or the penalty missed by Recoba against Helsingborg, in addition to the defeat in the Super Cup against Lazio. He seemed like one of those working-class guys who go to Heaven. Instead, it was the beginning of an ordeal, which happened later, with his transfer to Bologna and an injury that led to his contract being terminated.

Yet there was a time when Macellari could have been and was not. However, his seven appearances with Inter tell of a player who was too quickly forgotten, sacrificed on the altar of a coach, Marcello Lippi, whose ideas were too distant from those of Massimo Moratti, the president.

“I’m from Sesto San Giovanni. As a kid I supported Juve and went to San Siro to cheer them on. However, when I arrived on that pitch with Inter, I felt like I had made a beautiful dream come true. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long. Because Lippi, the coach who wanted me, left the scene, I also gradually disappeared. Partly because of my fault, partly because of the lack of confidence of the club and Tardelli. In short, when Lippi left I understood that it would be a wasted season. However, I am convinced that I have not changed at all since my time at Lecce and Cagliari. It is easy to get burned at Inter. Today Fabio Macellari turns 50.
