How long did it take to recover from the extra-time win against Germany? That’s one of the questions asked Marc CucurellaSpain full-back, in a long interview given to the official UEFA channels. The left-back dwelt on this topic and much more: “We were tired, but the joy of reaching the semi-finals and being two games away from winning the trophy was pure joy”.
Your partnership with Nico Williams on the Spanish left has been very positive. How does such a new combination work so well?
“We had an immediate connection. We hardly talk about football off the pitch. Nico is a carefree guy and so am I, so our personalities meshed well. During games I tell him to do what he wants because, with these great players who are so talented, it’s important that they feel comfortable.”
You’ve faced Kylian Mbappé once before, beating his France U19s with Spain in 2016. Tell us about him.
“It’s a real coincidence that we haven’t met for eight years, but we have to do it now. He’s one of those players who maybe doesn’t seem involved in an action but ends up making the difference. It will be difficult, but we are a strong and solid team. If we work together, as a group, we can defeat France.”
Do you mind the comparison with Carles Puyol? Not only for the hairstyle but also for the style of play…
“C”arles is a legend and something we have in common is always giving everything for the team. He knew his strengths and weaknesses very well and for him the team was always the most important thing. This is also one of my characteristics. I’m happy that this comparison is being made: he was a great player who made history. I hope to have a similar career.”
