Cannavaro: “In Vercelli with the third youngest team in the group. But the format doesn’t work”

Not just his experience on the Pro Vercelli bench, which culminated with his farewell on November 28th (CLICK HERE for the complete bench focus). During the interview given today to Radio Serie A, mister Paolo Cannavaro he also spoke at length about the youth policy in Serie C, the category in which the white shirts play: “In Vercelli I had the third youngest team in Serie C, with many players from the local youth sector and several loans. With the current format, I would field young people is important, because the club accumulates several important bonuses, but in this way you are forced to take the field with many so-called unders: this creates disparity within the group with the young people who sometimes sit back because they know they will play. The second consequence of this sort of obligations is that at 22 years old, when clubs no longer need them for age and economic reasons, the kids themselves risk being dumped by the various clubs and having to reinvent themselves in new realities.”

What solution then? Cannavaro also has his own idea on the matter: “Rather than continuing along this line, it would be more appropriate to build squads in which a certain number of young players must be included but each coach can freely choose who to field”
