Capello on Gilardino’s dismissal: “The timing leaves me perplexed. He was picking up the thread”

In his long interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fabio Capelloformer coach of Milan, Juventus, Roma and Real Madrid, spoke about the situation of Alberto Gilardinoexempted from Genoa: “There is a certain ease in changing, in spite of planning and coherence. I confess that I struggle to understand certain choices… Nothing surprises me anymore (laughs, ed.). Jokes aside, Gila has done a great job I worked last year and it seemed to me that in recent weeks the thread was picking up after a problematic start, including important sales on the market
and many injuries. But it is above all the timing that leaves me perplexed…”.

Why?
“First of all, why keep Gilardino a month ago, at Genoa’s worst moment, and then send him away now that some points were coming? And then: against Como the rossoblù played on Thursday 7 November, almost two weeks have passed in which the championship is been firm, yet the decision is taken a few days before a very delicate match like the one at Ferraris against Cagliari, everything suggests that in the meantime something has happened between the coach and the club that we don’t know.”

The results, however, are not satisfactory.
“Undoubtedly. But if you sell players like Gudmundsson and Retegui, it’s normal to have difficulties, regardless of who sits on the bench.”
