Cosmi on Italy: “It seems absurd, but starting over from negative situations is easier…”

Present in the ‘Radio Serie A’ studios, coach Serse Cosmi commented on the excellent moment that Luciano Spalletti’s Italy is going through after the disastrous European Championship. From September onwards, our national team achieved four victories and a draw: “It seems absurd, but on a mental level it is easier to start over from negative situations rather than positive ones. The positive ones immediately give you a lot, but then they can take something away from you. The European Championship in Germany gave everyone the opportunity to do the umpteenth restart and you manage to give your best in those situations. When there were messy, difficult situations, I was able to bring out the best in myself, while when things were going very well I inevitably wasn’t the same as in the difficult moments. It is not that I was slacking off, but I realized that when I had to get out of inhumane messes I was often able to come up with solutions with the staff. This happened in Italy, it’s part of our DNA, what will count is going to the World Cup and play it in the right way.”

In another passage, Cosmi then analyzed the performance of Alessandro Buongiorno, a centre-back who yesterday beat his teammate Romelu Lukaku: “Buongiorno is growing out of all proportion and this is a good thing. Conte is the right coach to improve certain concepts and in Naples if you find the feeling with the city it becomes something more also from a psychological point of view. As defenders we are in good shape today, as well as with externals”.
