Man United ahead in the FA Cup, Amorim: “We all suffered together, we have to compete”

Reuben Amorim spoke to the microphones of BBC after his Manchester United victory in the FA Cup on penalties against Arsenal: “Luckily the players were there, they fought. Sometimes what we talk about before the match is not tactical or technical, it’s this. We have to compete: it doesn’t matter for what, no matter what situation we found ourselves in today. We deserved to win: Arsenal didn’t deserve to lose but we deserved to win, the way we fought was really tough right from the start ‘start. We didn’t have much possession, but we were in control without the ball.

I would also like to thank all the fans. It was incredible. I didn’t realize that that whole area was made up of our supporters, so it was a good day for us, now we have to rest the players, I’m already thinking about the next match, they’re really tired.

Sometimes we have the feeling that everything will be okay in the end. I felt it from the start of the second half, even after the penalty. I think the Arsenal team thought maybe today wasn’t their day. I’m really happy with the way they controlled the game without the ball. We defended very well, we were really strong on set pieces. It was a good day, but now I’m thinking about the next match and I’m worried.

We were facing a great team and it wasn’t just 90 minutes, it was more than that and then you feel that the players are really tired. They brought in new players, they controlled the ball all the time, it was a sacrifice for my players. But we deserved to go through this round, because we all suffered together and showed character: this is a very important thing.”
