“Every year around this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words. But this year I know exactly what I’m grateful for: for being alive. I want to take a moment to recognize something that I understood: I spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, for the next year, always assuming that tomorrow was guaranteed imminent death of others, and even at that time I couldn’t fully understand how precious life was. What I experienced recently was eye-opening.

Life is fragile, and every single moment counts – continued the West Ham centre-forward -. I am so grateful to God for giving me the strength to carry on and for allowing me to still be here. To the emergency services, to the NHS, to the Air Ambulance, to everyone at Royal London and Cromwell Hospital and to everyone, from top to bottom, at West Ham. To the medical team, the board of directors, all the staff, my teammates and the fantastic West Ham fans… I honestly couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you with all my heart. To my loved ones who have been by my side through everything, I cannot express how much you mean to me. Finally, to the entire football community, thank you for all the love and support you have given me. It really meant the world to me. I love you and will be eternally grateful for each of you. Happy new year, and I’ll be back on the pitch soon,” he commented.
