In the summer of 2004 the news hit all the news. Fabio Cannavaro goes to Juventus. The national team defender leaves Inter to end up in the most hated team, but not for a record fee. For an exchange with Fabian Carini, an honest goalkeeper who, however, never managed to break through. Neither in Italy, although he had arrived with laurels and honors, nor elsewhere. With the Uruguay national team, before Muslera arrived, he still made 74 appearances.
Years ago the same Uruguayan goalkeeper decided to relive his transfer to the Nerazzurri. “I was at Standard Liège on loan from Juventus and I always played. My agent called me telling me about the possibility of returning to Italy with Inter interested. He asked me what I thought and for me it could be a good experience. I found out about the exchange at equal only when I arrived in Milan but it wasn’t a problem I asked myself and even now being associated with that negotiation doesn’t bother me. I was lucky enough to face Cannavaro also with Uruguay, he is a champion and an excellent person. For me the only important thing was to return to Italy trying to find space.”
From then on he entered the collective imagination for not being exactly a far-sighted choice, not so much on his part – who in fact played at Standard Liège – but on Inter who lost a future Ballon d’Or for a goalkeeper who would never be been a starter. Today Fabian Carini turns 45.
