Former Colombian star sentenced to 8 years: he wanted to embark for Madrid with 3kg of drugs

The Superior Court of the department of Antioquia confirmed the eight-year prison sentence against the former Colombian footballer Diego León Osorio. He was arrested on 13 April 2023 at the José María Córdova airport in Rionegro (north-west Colombia), while he was trying to travel to Madrid with around two kilos of cocaine.

Last May 21, Osorio, 54, was convicted in first instance. This decision was challenged by the defense but a few hours ago the Court confirmed the sentence: “During the luggage inspection, approximately one kilogram of cocaine hydrochloride was found hidden in the insoles of four pairs of tennis shoes”, specified the Power of attorney in a statement.

Osorio was one of the stars of the Colombian national team in the 1990s along with Carlos ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama and René Higuita. He had already been arrested at the same airport in 2016 and, three years later, he was also convicted of breaking traffic laws, as well as producing and marketing drugs. In 2002 he allegedly negotiated 40 kilos of cocaine with undercover DEA agents in Miami, Florida.
