11.17pm – Vincenzo Italiano’s press conference has begun

Was the match decided by Pobega’s expulsion?
“I get angry because it’s something we repeat every day, every training session and every technical meeting. In this football where everyone dribbles and has quality, giving away a man is like giving away the game to your opponents. We tried with the two strikers and took it to the end , but an episode like this against a Lazio team in such good shape doesn’t allow you to get a result. We managed to do positive things for 35 minutes, we even kicked on goal, but the sending off ended the match , it already is the second sending off which doesn’t allow us to score points and I hope the boys take this situation on board, it’s difficult to stay on the pitch with a numerical inferiority. Now we have to think about Wednesday.”

Are there other aspects of your race that you didn’t like?
“I am someone who pays attention to this topic every day, for me the expulsion ends the match. We held out until their goal, then Lazio broke up. For me, for 35 minutes we played a good match against a team in great health, we knew we had to sacrifice ourselves in numerical equality, even more so in numerical inferiority. If you give away a man it’s just all-out defense to get to the 90th, today I’m also sorry that we spent so much energy before of a very important match like the one on Wednesday.”

How is Ferguson?
“Ferguson is fine from a clinical point of view, now he must increase the minutes and the pace by improving his condition. When he does we will have a great player available, putting him in today was not congenial which is why we avoided it. He is recovering and is coming back”.

What main differences have you noticed between Rome and Lazio in the space of two weeks?
“This Lazio has strong players, the coach has found the key to making them perform well. They get results in the cup and in the league, there is great enthusiasm and trust, when you arrive here it is difficult to get results. The environment pushes and the players level they have the personality to carry the team. We were talking about it on the bench, they were already tough with the same numbers but congratulations to Lazio. There’s still a life ahead of them, but at the moment Lazio are a dangerous team and they’re doing well.”

With the changes at half-time did you want to manage the dribbling more and ease Lazio’s pressure?
“We didn’t want to leave a single striker at the mercy of their defenders, thus having two attackers to try to restart with three midfielders who could hold the ball and manage the pace. Until the goal we hadn’t risked anything, once the result was unblocked the head of Lazio and they put us in difficulty. We left only one striker, today we used the two strikers and we tried to have the possibility of putting Lazio in difficulty until the end but we didn’t succeed.”
