Tebas from the Social Football Summit in Rome: “I haven’t changed my mind about the Super League”

During the “Social Football Summit 2024”, currently taking place at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the president of the Spanish LaLiga spoke Javier Tebas. These are his words: “One of our main problems is the lack of usability on social networks. As a La Liga, our social profiles are also superior to the Premier League, but clubs outside Real Madrid and Barcelona are much less followed than English clubs. We must also exploit the connections with the Hispanic world outside Spain, all Hispanic fans are a resource for Spanish football.

Of course I haven’t changed my mind about the Super League, I call him David Copperfield because he is a television wizard. The Super League model first presented a league closed to the biggest clubs, now we don’t know when it will start, what format it will have, previously there was talk of three categories, now it is open to other categories. It’s not clear, at the first event I attended here we talked about the Super League, now we talk about relationships and fans. THE

The president of Real Madrid says that the project will begin in September 2025, based on what we have heard before it is not known when it will begin. It must be understood that the European industry has a very specific structure at a football level, the verticality of national competitions is linked to the horizontality of European competitions. In the Super League we are only talking about verticality where the top 14 teams will enjoy huge revenues and it will create a huge difference between the 14 clubs and the rest of the world.

The national championships will be killed like this. We must understand that the audiovisual rights and sponsors will go to those who participate in this competition, the TV rights pie will not expand, only the income of the richest will increase. Instead, we need to improve financial fair play, we need to improve many elements. There are two thousand professional clubs and 60 thousand professional footballers in Europe, this model will ruin everything. UEFA with the ECA tried to propose a vertical model with two categories in 2019 under the presidency of Agnelli at the ECA and the clubs rejected this proposal.

I was present in FIFA when the change of the World Cup in Qatar was proposed by moving the World Cup from summer to winter, this was a consultation as if I had done it with my son. ‘Where do you want to go on holiday?’ Ok, then I’ll do as I please. UEFA and FIFA act as if we were a monopoly, the aims of UEFA and FIFA are to protect football and that is fine. What cannot be done is to commit abuses of a dominant position, which is what was ruled by the European Court of Justice. Even for transfers it is important to take this situation into account, twenty days ago FIFA issued a circular on the registration of players for the Club World Cup without any consultation. At this moment what has been said by the European Court of Justice is not being respected, UEFA and FIFA must respect transparency rules and adopt clear processes, otherwise they will run the risk of finding themselves faced with delicate situations. I am the first to want to defend FIFA and UEFA, but I don’t want to defend whoever is leading FIFA or UEFA because the rules of the European Court of Justice must be respected.”
