On the sidelines of the award ceremony, Nils Liedholm, the president of Inter Beppe Marotta he thus spoke to the reporters present including TMW: “I was lucky enough to meet Liedholm in 1969, I was 12 years old and I went every day to watch Varese train. “I believe that with technology the situation improves, errors decrease. If I have to refer to what happened on Sunday and to the invocation of Conte, an intelligent person and great communicator who will certainly have his objective when he speaks, I have to say that the referee he was very close to the action, so there was certainly physical contact, the foot was moved and therefore in my opinion it was a penalty. If we then have to discuss a better use of VAR in terms of protocol this is part of a debate constructive that needs to be done within the football system”.
In your opinion, did Conte want to shift his focus and attention?
“I don’t know, but I don’t think it was even a decisive episode, unfortunately. We can think about the VAR methodologies and the improvements in what technology is available, but the centrality of the referee must always be a priority. And I repeat, in this case for me it was about rigor.”
How can a manager reach the presidency of Inter?
“One of the elements is perseverance, in the concept of leadership. Never giving up and giving your best, so the goals are achievable.”
Is Inter not at last year’s level?
“Our performances in the Champions League seem very respectable to me. In the championship we are one point from the top. Even last year we were hunters and Juventus were the hare, now Napoli are ahead. What has changed compared to last year it’s that there are a small group of teams that deservedly occupy the top positions. It’s all still a long way off, there are many games and many points and so for now it’s essential to stick to the top. Then January and February will be the decisive months “.
Who impressed you the most?
“If I have to analyze the extraordinary performances, certainly Atalanta, Fiorentina and Lazio. It’s been a long time since they deservedly reached these levels.”
Scaroni jokingly said that he is president of the only team in Milan…
“It depends on your point of view… If he represents the only team in Milan, perhaps we represent something even superior. I don’t want to cause controversy, Paolo is a friend and everyone tries to advance their club by defining it as the best. I hope that Milan can reach the second star as soon as possible.”
On a subconscious level, is the team focusing more on the Champions League than on the championship?
“I believe that a great team must respond to every competition, there is no distinction between the championship and the Champions League. We want to be protagonists all the way, then it will also depend on the opponents and what we manage to demonstrate.”
