France, Konaté sincere: “I would like to have Mbappé’s footballing quality, but not his life”

In an interview granted to Canal+ Sunday evening in the Canal Football Club programme, Ibrahima Konatewho has regained his place as an undisputed starter in great form this season, is once again in contention for a starting role with France, where his place is contested with teammates William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano. Last month, he even declared himself a candidate among the potential vice-captains to take over from Mbappé, who was already absent. He is also the last player to wear the captain’s armband following Aurélien Tchouaméni’s dismissal in Belgium.

“We like fashion, while remaining focused on football,” he declared, referring to the passion he shares with Mbappe. “When he is with us, everyone is around him. His position is exceptional, and I often tell him that I would like to have his football level, but not his life. Honestly, it is very difficult to see his name everywhere. With the minimal action or gesture, we constantly talk about his qualities and what he brings; he has made a huge leap in quality, and the whole world is aware of it substitutes take charge of the work, be decisive and help us win. It’s the coach who makes the choices; I have no say in the matter. What matters most to me is that we play to our strengths and that we win.”

Konaté also downplayed the impact of the clothes worn by the players upon their traditional arrival on Monday at Clairefontaine, which has increasingly become a topic of debate among observers: “We like fashion; it’s nice to show fashion and football fans how we can dress up. It’s something new. We can’t please everyone, but we’re focused on football.”
