The 12th matchday of Serie A officially begins today and not Friday as a canonical championship round would dictate. And instead we start already tonight with the Ferraris match between Genoa and Como at 8.45pm. But, exactly, why is it being played on a Thursday, with European cup matches still taking place (and three Serie A teams playing at the same time)?
The motif is extra-football and takes us back to the world of racing cars. And at the rally. Yes, because this weekend Genoa will be the scene of the usual Lantern Rallythe last act of the Italian Rally Cup, now in its 40th edition. A highly anticipated event that generates great participation, considering that more than 170 cars will show up at the starting line and that the route is located in the heart of the Ligurian capital.
For the two teams, who both played on Monday at 8.45pm, there will essentially be a new midweek round to facehaving to return to the field just over 72 hours after the last match, and thus stopping well ahead of all the other teams in the top Italian championship. Priority to the Rally della Lanterna compared to the challenge between Genoa and Como, for the latter there will therefore be some adaptation to do.
