The only (sporting) advantage that Fonseca can gain from the postponement of Bologna-Milan

The news is widely public knowledge: Bologna and Milan will not take the field today at the “Dall’Ara” to compete on the ninth day of the Serie A championship. The match, in fact, was postponed due to the bad weather which heavily affected the the Emilian area in the last few days. Despite the efforts of Milan and the Lega Serie A, local politics have been adamant: they are not played and they will not be played.

The date of recovery
To date, the most concrete opportunity for the recovery of Bologna-Milan would be that of 5 or 26 February 2025, the days in which the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup are scheduled: if both Milan and Bologna entered, the League would have to let them play at the same time on one of the two dates and create the recovery slot on the day left free. In all of this, it will also be necessary to decide on the recovery of the Como-Milan match which should be played at the beginning of January but which will be postponed for the Italian Super Cup in Arabia.

The advantage
Milan, obviously, would have preferred to play the match: nobody likes having an asterisk in the standings for more than four months and then… Well, Theo and Reijnders will have to serve their one-match suspension against league leaders Napoli. Not exactly the best opponent. The only sporting advantage that can derive from this situation is resting a few more days compared to rivals: in a period in which there will be a lot of matches, a few more hours of downtime can make the difference.
