Fontana: “Called by Salernitana? It should have been a source of pride for Latina too”

TMW Radio

During today’s live broadcast of To All Cregistered transmission TMW Radio and dedicated to the world of Serie C, intervened Mister Gaetano Fontanawho, currently unemployed, spoke to our microphones about the moment he is experiencing: “I’m in a moment of study, let’s put it that way. You have to know how to take advantage of the time you have available and not waste it. Our job is constantly evolution, we take the opportunity to keep up with the times and the proposals”.

Speaking of proposals, let’s get straight into the topic: in the summer the B team’s opportunity with Salernitana had arrived.
“We work for this. Having been a professional athlete I have always aimed to reach the top category, I struggled to do so and as a coach the ambitions are the same. Each of us has a type of path, and must consider what comes, but for years I have been struggling in the third series with the hope of also tasting the other categories as a coach. With Salernitana everything happened very suddenly, but Latina had already known about the eventuality for a few weeks, and when Mister Sottil decided to give up the job Petrachi showed up forcefully to convince me: but clearly I wouldn’t have refused a place with those ambitions. I was greatly gratified by everything, being paid attention to by a professional like Petrachi in such a context gave me confirmation that the work done for years was noticed. Now it is legitimate to raise the bar and think of being able to work in something where there is a project that can lead upwards.”

The message sent, that of chasing your dreams by believing in what you do, even risking what you have, is certainly positive.
“I always ask the same question: what would other professionals and even those who work with Latina have done in my place? I believe that the club should also have ridden the moment and been gratified that their coach was followed by a superior category team, moreover Salernitana who had just been relegated from Serie A: it was something that should have represented a source of pride, but it wasn’t . In any case, regardless of everything, as a consequence of this, I have decided to wait, but I would like to thank the various companies that have contacted me to start a new career path: but, for the projection that I have set for myself, I had to give up. But it’s nice to be courted from a professional point of view.”

At the moment, 13 sackings out of 60 clubs after 10 matchdays. Why do we always press the accelerator on exemptions?
“Because it is the easiest and most immediate solution. When things don’t go, attention falls on the coach because he is not capable of transferring the idea of the club, but I would start from an assumption that is fundamental for me: when a team is created, a complete analysis is made on the choice of each player. player, to put him in a position to do his utmost to achieve the final collective goal. For the coach this concept is not valid, many times you don’t choose a coach because you have followed him, because he has certain characteristics, a certain methodology, you don’t study his proposal. But to build a machine that works it takes time, the proposals must be elaborated, also regarding the mental sphere of the team. With a company that supports you, you work calmly and the answer comes, otherwise it is more difficult. I think for example of Sarri: in Empoli he didn’t start in an impactful way, and there without a club to support him and back him he would have been eliminated after 7-8 days and would not have become who he is. It takes courage to defend a choice, but unfortunately this is not always the case, and it is difficult for the coaches to stand out, also because they see labels attached to them which are then difficult to remove. In Italy, however, we want everything immediately, we are result-dependent.”

‘Everything right away’ is also expected of young people, and the risk is that they will get burned by the too many expectations created. Even Camarda was criticized…
“I agree, and in the case of Camarda we are also talking about a top club that protects and follows the players in many aspects. It is true that in Italy there are laws in favor of playing time, but this fact often clashes with what must be the real growth of the boy: the work should start from further away, the athlete should also be trained from a mental and emotional point of view, to be able to cope with certain pressures because young people have to make mistakes in order to learn, and should be supported in their mistakes.”

To stay on topic, let’s look at the results: who are the teams that are impressing you in this part of the championship?
“In Group C certainly Monopoli, Audace Cerignola and Picerno: for many they may represent novelties, but they have been doing extensive work for years and are achieving important results despite the fact that in that group there are forces such as Catania, Trapani, Benevento and Avellino. Playing with they mean that planning and futuristic thinking are dominating. Alcione is also having a great championship, as newly promoted they are the third force in Group A. In Group B, however, many teams, unfortunately, due to the coat of arms they have, are standing. disappointing, but they have their strength and their dynamics to adjust, but in the long run SPAL, Perugia, Ascoli will just have to find the right dimension to return to the championships they deserve, and the same goes for Padova and Crotone too, right. to name two. I would also add Vicenza. They are places that must find the right way to hit the B, a functional environment for those contexts.”
