Missed red card for Cristante, Marelli: “All the elements for the expulsion were not there”

Luca Marellireferee commentator of Daznreturned to the most salient episodes of the last day, starting with those of Roma-Interwith the contact between Cristante and Thuram in the first half: “The foul is there, the red card materializes only in the clear by DOGSO, that is, a clear goal opportunity denied. The four references are: distance from the goal, direction, possession of the ball and other defenders. The first three are there, but there must be absolute certainty that all four must be there. They did not intervene, probably because they considered Ndicka potentially capable of intervening on Thuram at the limit, but I think I would have behaved like that too. We have the certainty, but it has to be there to get a red card.”

Marelli then moves on to contact between Pavlovic and Kabasele: “Pavlovic risks a lot, because he completely misses the ball. But the contact is really very light. Chiffi is well positioned, the contact is minimal.”

Here is the penalty awarded to Naples: “The contact is on Politano’s left leg, it’s a classic field decision. VAR doesn’t intervene because they are field evaluations: the referee decides.”

Lazio’s sporting director, Fabiani, spoke about little uniformity of judgment: “As far as ‘soft’ penalties are concerned, it is the referees who must not blow the whistle. You cannot draw a line, the VAR cannot intervene.”

Final comment on the shot of Douglas Luiz to Patric with a distant ball: “I don’t conceive of certain behaviors, for me it was expulsion”.
