Sommer is not satisfied: “Championship and Champions League: we must not preclude ourselves from anything”

To the notebooks of La Gazzetta dello Sport the Inter goalkeeper spoke exclusively Yann Sommer. These are his words, starting with an assessment of the type of season it could be: “I imagine a very difficult, contested season. We have already seen how strong Juve and Napoli are, but we also lost the derby, so also watch out for Milan. When they say that every race is difficult in Italy, it’s not rhetoric. It’s the truth. Why is it difficult to confirm yourself? It’s all in the head. If you win, you’re happy and a little relaxed, you do less than the year before and not at this level you can really afford it.”

What’s happening to Inter’s defense?
«The answer is simple, and in a word that I learned well in Italy: “Preventive”. We don’t do those markings well in many situations. It’s a very important point, last year we always had excellent preventive measures when we had the ball, we were always compact and tidy and it was difficult to get inside. This is what we need to get back to our level: we have a lot of quality and we will always find the goal, but it’s the whole team that needs to do better defensively, be compact and well positioned if you lose the ball.”

Champions League goal?
“It is possible to achieve the same results on both fronts thanks to the team we have: it is not easy, the calendar is crowded, but achieving
the maximum is our goal. We can’t preclude anything. The Coach has a strong winning mentality, and this makes the difference. He does everything needed to win: preparation, meetings with his opponents, when he senses that there isn’t the right mood in training he intervenes and pushes us. We always have to work to the limit, we need to stimulate each other. I love working with him.”

His future?
“My contract expires in 2026: I don’t know where I will be, I haven’t thought about it yet, but here in Milan I’m happy. And I have great challenges ahead, at the moment I don’t see myself anywhere else, I put all my energy into Inter.”
