Liverpool, Slot: “Alexander-Arnold is important for us and still has room for growth”

Arne SlotLiverpool manager, spoke at a press conference ahead of the match against Chelsea on Sunday. We start from the situation linked to the various contract renewals: “The players have been busy with their respective national teams, like Trent Alexander-Arnold, who scored a splendid free-kick. There will always be discussions about contracts, and this is positive: it means that the players are doing well. However, I cannot give further details on possible renewals.”

Will the next few weeks be decisive?
“Judging the team on just one week is not right. We should evaluate our performance after a series of matches, not just three, but six, seven or eight. This way we will know better how we react to difficult challenges, both in the Champions League and in the league. Only Manchester City and Arsenal have shown they can compete at European and domestic level in recent seasons. Now it’s our turn to prove it.”

On the match against Chelsea, the most difficult match so far?
“Looking at the league table, it could be like this. Manchester United is a great team and has invested a lot, as has Chelsea. But it’s not just a matter of league table: the form and strategy of the day count. Even with teams like Wolves, who are at the bottom of the table, we had some difficulties.”

On the importance of defending against Chelsea
“It will be crucial. To be successful this season, we need to be defensively solid. We will face very strong players, like those of Chelsea and Manchester United. We will have to manage them as a team, but don’t forget to create our own chances too. Fortunately, we have players capable of score”.

On Conor Bradley and his future
“I think he will have a great future here. He is a very good player and, despite the competition from Trent, good players always find their place in the team.”

On the role of Virgil van Dijk
“Virgil has been fundamental for us, not only on the pitch, but also in training. He is always the most energetic and influential during the sessions. He is our leader, not only during the weekend matches, but also during the week.”

On Alexander-Arnold as left back for England
“I didn’t see the match, but I know his value. Quality players like Trent always find a way to do well, regardless of the position they play in. Trent was very important for our attacking game and he also improved the phase defensively. There is still room for growth, but he has had an excellent season so far, both with us and with the national team.”
