The curse of the lost Serie B playoff final. Cremonese is no exception

As is now known, yesterday, when the second national break of the season is now approaching, Cremonese has opted for the dismissal of coach Giovanni Stroppawho, as we anticipated, will almost certainly be replaced by Eugenio Corini, who should be announced today by the grey-red team, currently eleventh in the Serie B table with 11 points in the 8 matches played so far.

Stroppa pays a start to the year below expectations, but La Gazzetta dello Sport on newsstands today underlines a curious fact in this sense, confirmed by Cremonese herself: those who lose the playoff final have a hard time recovering in the following season. The most striking example is last year’s Bari, who only survived the play-offs by beating Ternana, all 365 days after the Serie A team lost in the promotion play-off final against Cagliari. But then there are also the examples of Pisa, Cittadella, Frosinone, Palermo and Carpi; the last finalist who did not suffer this unfortunate fate was Pescara, who after the playoff lost in the 2024-15 championship was promoted to Serie A the following year.

Let us remember in the meantime that Stroppa’s dismissal is the second seasonal dismissal in Serie B, preceded by that of Andrea Pirlo at Sampdoria on 29 August; in his place, Andrea Sottil.
