Rocchi: “Not satisfied with the refereeing over the last weekend.” The words on VAR on call

Gianluca RocchiCAN A and B referee designator, spoke at the presentation of the second edition of the FIGC Sports Justice Code: “Our idea would be to have VAR operators only on a permanent basis, we realized that they have a slightly different philosophy. The separation it is fundamental, if you work on a small group the interpretations are more common than on a large group.

Although much criticised, our VARs are highly appreciated and we receive offers from abroad every week. We send few because we are few, it’s sad to have lost Irrati and Valeri, but it shows the goodness of the work done”.

Gravina asked FIFA to start testing on-call VAR and actual time. What do you think?“These are proposals on which there is an IFAB discussion, I cannot discuss them too much. As for the challenge, it is an alternative solution. Or rather, it could be a complementary solution for top football: the objective is to have a correct decision As for the actual time, we are working on time losses and other things: if it were to arrive in football, it would revolutionize the sport, but probably everyone would play the same minutes.”

In the case of VAR on call, does the team’s call exclude that of the referee or can they coexist?“The experiment that was done excludes it, but we are talking about a tournament where there were very few rooms. In the case of tournaments that are much more covered from this point of view, we could have a double solution.”

Are you satisfied with the refereeing on the final day?
“No”

Without going into the merits of the controversy, depending on the referee it seems to have a different regulation. Is greater homogeneity achievable with training?“Training is fundamental, especially in a group. We are 46 referees: either I put a chip inside each of them, or everyone has a thinking mind and their own philosophy. The objective is to have a common line: they can be free to represent one’s own thoughts, but if we make a decision it must be followed together. The ideal would be to have one hundred percent homogeneity, but it is practically impossible: it is a question of being human. Even with a very well written rule, it remains up to those who judge the possibility of interpretation”.
