Mastrandrea (Sports Judge): “Racism? We must also make the public responsible”

TMW

Gerardo Mastrandreasports judge of Serie A, spoke at the presentation of the second edition of the FIGC Sports Justice Code: “We in sports justice hope to be up to this very broad regulatory framework. I entered sports justice when there were no codes and not even maxims, now we have a branch of law that has its own code.

We continue to fight the discriminatory phenomena that continue to plague our world. The code has made certain aspects clear: there is the possibility of considering the adequacy of organizational and preventative methods with respect to these episodes. The organizational model does not save the company, it is not enough to have it but it must be concretely evaluated. Let’s not forget that the sports judge also has the possibility of giving a year’s probation, freezing the sanction in the hope that the event does not occur again.

Technology allows the identification of individual perpetrators and is an important challenge for companies. They must be made responsible, but the public must also be made responsible: it would be nice to see public dissociation. It would be to see that, when the few start discriminatory chants in the stadium, the rest of the public openly condemns it. It is an important element, which in some cases also led me to consider exemption from liability.”

The relationship with the referees: “I’m happy to leave the technical-discretionary choice to the referees. With them there is maximum collaboration, we work quickly on the reports and sometimes it’s a matter of evaluating the violent conduct to calibrate the sanctions.”
