Farewell to Franco Chimenti, Malagò: “I lose a brother, he honored sport until the end”

The world of sport mourns the passing of Franco Chimenti. The president of the Italian Golf Federation, confirmed for the seventh term last September 25 by the assembly gathered in Rome with 71.29 percent of the votes, passed away at the age of 85.

“It is a very deep pain, I lose not only a true friend, but an older brother, a special person who never let me lack his support and his legendary, affectionate complicity”, recalls CONI President Giovanni Malagò. “We have shared and faced together, from the first moment, many challenges in the name of a common passion for sport, with the aim of promoting the growth and development of our world. A world that from today becomes an orphan of a manager of undeniable depth , of a man of great culture, unanimously appreciated and loved by all. We have the duty to enhance his example and to renew the commitment and enthusiasm with which he faced life and honored sport to the end. Hello, Franco And thank you for everything.”

Deputy Vice President of CONI from February to June 2013 and subsequently President of CONI Servizi SpA, Chimenti was born in Naples on 7 August 1939. For a long time he was Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the “La Sapienza” University of Rome, where he then held the position of Dean, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, academic of the Medical Biological Sciences and of the Noble Pharmaceutical Chemistry College, author of multiple manuscripts and communications published by International Journals, from 1970 to 2000 he was President of the Dermocosmetic Research Institute.

From 1981 to 1985 he held the position of Vice President of Lazio Sports Clubof which he became President in 1986. Councilor and then Vice President of the Italian Golf Federation since 1996, he was elected for the first time at the helm of the FIG in 2002 and became part of the CONI National Council, also holding the position of member of the Board from 2004 to 2008 and from 2012 to 2021.
Great architect of the Ryder Cup hosted for the first time in Italy, in Rome, in 2023, on 20 December 2021 Chimenti received the Golden Collar for sporting merit, the highest honor conferred by CONI, crowning a career as a service manager of sport.

Today, from 12pm to 6pm, and on Saturday, from 9am to 12pm, the funeral chapel will be set up in the CONI Hall of Honour. The funeral will be celebrated on Saturday at 2.30 pm at the Church of San Roberto Bellarmino.
