Diego Roberto Godín he said goodbye to football at the end of Huracan-Vélez, on 31 July 2023. However, last 20 February he picked up his boots again to begin an adventure with Porongos, an amateur team from Trinidad (department of Flores).
An experience that led him to play on fields decidedly less noble than the Italian and Spanish ones, but which was very important for the former defender of Atletico, Inter and Cagliari, ending with a triumph: his team won the championship by beating in the final Melo Wanderers 2-0. At the end of the match, the 38-year-old Uruguayan (161 appearances and 8 goals for the national team) announced his definitive retirement: “I’m happy. A little tired, but happy. It’s a title that I value no more or less than any other: it’s simply different, because amateurism contains the purest and most genuine feeling of football and its people, and because winning with friends, brothers and cousins at your side is truly special from the bottom of my heart , now that’s really all. I told the fans: I won’t play anymore.”
An incredible experience that took me through a mountain of cities and departments, where I had to compete but also knowing many people and being able to feel the respect and kindness of many people who really touched my soul.
Happy, very happy to be able to… pic.twitter.com/X6W2Ahy0EJ
