Final result: Genoa-Sampdoria 6-7 after penalties
GENOA
Loyal 7 – Cup goalkeeper for mister Alberto Gilardino. He reactively parries Coda’s central conclusion in the first half. He surpasses himself a few moments later, always on the Blucerchiati attacker, diving to his left and taking the ball out of the corner and then on La Gumina. Blameless on Borini’s goal, he parries Benedetti’s penalty.
I want 6 – He is in full derby mood and it shows from the very first minutes when he makes Vieira feel his physique. He controls Ioannou’s runs on his side very well. He closes late on Borini on the occasion of the Blucerchiati’s equaliser, he kicks his penalty very well.
Ban 6 – Coda knows him very well having had him as a teammate two years ago. He always plays in advance, choosing the right time for his intervention and fights with great vigor. His penalty kick is perfect.
Vasquez 6 – He often breaks away, accompanying the action as often happens in the championship. In defense he does not make any mistakes, going to raise the dam in the center of the defense. He scores his penalty.
Sabelli 6.5 – He wins the duel with the Cypriot defender on his flank. He pushes hard to cross. He takes a blow to the knee, it seems he has to leave the field, but he grits his teeth like a true fighter. From 53′ Zanoli 5.5 – He is also a former player of this match, he shows great accelerations on the wing but then misses the decisive penalty.
Thorsby 6 – He gives life to a rustic duel with Vulikic. He is always sought on high balls making the most of his long levers. He fights in the middle of the field in a derby with a very high pace.
Badelj 6.5 – Quiet when he has to set up the action in the middle of the field. He finds Pinamonti with a first touch for the goal that unlocks the match. He often seeks dialogue with the forwards, going to look for the speed of Vitinha with a couple of really interesting balls. From 78′ Bohinen sv
Frendrup 6.5 – Tireless is perhaps the most appropriate adjective for the young Danish midfielder who covers practically all areas of the pitch, always putting in great desire and great pace. Perfect from the penalty spot.
Martin 5.5 – On his flank Genoa suffers a lot from Sampdoria’s attacks. Depaoli pushes a lot with the Spanish winger who is unable to contain him. His contribution is also limited in the push phase. From 53′ Morning 5.5 – He comes in as a left winger to provide more cover, he is unable to make an impact and the goal action comes from his side.
Pineapple 7 – Not even ten minutes on the clock and he shows his true goalscoring streak. A precise conclusion that hits the post and ends up in Silvestri’s net for a goal that opens the derby. From 78′ Ankeye sv
Vine 6.5 – He often moves out to the left to avoid giving his opponents any reference points. Silvestri makes a good save on his diagonal at the start of the match. He almost doubles the lead but doesn’t understand Thorsby. A game of substance anyway. From 64′ Sights 5.5 – He returns to test the pitch after his injury, he gives his contribution to the rossoblù cause. He kicks his penalty badly, opening his plate too much.
Alberto Gilardino 5.5 – The derby starts very well for him, but ends in the worst possible way. His team plays a second half below expectations and the substitutions don’t help much. He goes out of the Coppa Italia and loses the derby.
SAMPDORIA
Silvestri 7 – Not at fault for Genoa’s goal, Pinamonti kicks at a very angle. He shows up in the derby with a very nice save on Vitinha. Always sure when he has to come out on high balls that come his way. He guesses the angle by rejecting Zanoli’s decisive penalty.
Bereszynski 6.5 – He has played in several derbies. He uses his experience to try to stem the attacks of Alberto Gilardino’s men. Always very confident in closing down, his was the assist for Borini’s goal. His penalty was perfect.
Romagnoli 5 – He wouldn’t even defend badly on Vitinha’s physicality but he certifies a negative start to the season with a blue pencil error. He gives the ball to Genoa who unlocks the match with Pinamonti. He gets a straight red in injury time that leaves his team with ten men.
Vulik 6 – He follows Thorsby practically man-to-man. The hand-to-hand duels with the Norwegian are very beautiful. Safe in the center of defense, he fits perfectly into the derby atmosphere.
Depaoli 6.5 – He is the most dangerous man for Sampdoria, especially in the first half of the match. First with a run that leads to a conclusion, too strangled, his left foot. And then with a right foot that goes just wide. He shoots well from eleven meters
Akinsanmiro 6 – Sometimes he always keeps the ball more than he should but in the end he still manages to put in a positive performance. He doesn’t make any big mistakes, he should be seen more up front. From 62′ Blessed 5.5 – He comes in and gets a yellow card right away. He is confident as the minutes go by but he kicks his shot badly and has it blocked by Leali.
Meulensteen 6 – Deployed by Sottil in the control room. He is often seen and gets the ball but sometimes his openings are too slow giving way to the restart of the team coached by Alberto Gilardino. He grows in the second half like the whole team.
Viera 6.5 – He uses his physicality to try to recover the ball in the middle of the field and he does it very well, duelling with the opponents without ever escaping. He is also seen in the construction of the action. From 75′ Borini 7 – He comes in and gives the strike that rebalances the derby della Lanterna and then scores his penalty. He’s also there for the Blucerchiati’s season.
Ioannou 5.5 – In front of him are Sabelli and Vogliacco who do not leave him the space to strike. He is seen very little in the push phase, imprecise when he has to make crosses towards the center of the area. From 62′ Barrel 7 – Nice duel all speed with Zanoli, he puts some good balls inside the penalty area. But he is remembered for the decisive penalty that in one fell swoop gives the derby and qualification to his team.
Tail 6 – He is one of the great exes of this match. He is seen intermittently but still warms up Leali’s gloves in the first half with a conclusion that is too central and with a backheel that triggers Depaoli. He almost scores with a great conclusion on the fly. From 62′ Overall 6.5 – He earns several free kicks, tries to finish and scores from eleven meters.
The Gumina 5.5 – It’s the surprise move by mister Sottil in this derby della Lanterna. He is seen very little in the push phase. The only chance was a diagonal in the first half of the match saved by Leali in a dive. From 75′ Sekulov 6 – He shows some good acceleration and loses a few too many balls. However, he scores his penalty kick very well.
Andrea Subtle 7 – His team starts as underdogs even though in a derby you always start on equal terms. His team shows character by playing a great second half. In the end he celebrates with his boys and gives them the qualification to the eighth finals.
