After leaving Milan, Simon Kjaer is looking for a new adventure, perhaps the last of his career. Meanwhile, the experienced Danish defender has decided to end his career in the national team and announced it in a long post published on social media: “There is a last time for everything. I have decided to retire from the Danish national team after 15 fantastic years in red and white. The timing feels right but I am also a little sad, because the feeling of unity in and around the national team has meant a lot to me and has been such an important part of my entire life.

When I was four years old and started playing football, I never dreamed that I would play 132 games for my national team and participate in six World Cups and European Championships. I am very proud of the enormous privilege of having been the captain of the national team for the last eight years.
A big thank you to everyone, the Federation, the coaches, the staff, my many teammates over the years and especially the amazing Danish fans for everything we have achieved together. It has always been an honour and a privilege to represent Denmark.”
