The midfielder’s adventure at Sassuolo Alexander Marketsborn in 2002, ended after a long journey that saw him as a protagonist since the youth sector without ever debuting in the first team. After his experiences in Serie C with Montevarchi, Gubbio and Carrarese, the player flew to Greece to sign with Athens Kallithea. This is the press release from the Greek club:
“Athens Kallithea FC announce the acquisition of Italian midfielder Alessandro Mercati from Italian Serie B club Sassuolo.
Mercati, 22, has been a highly regarded talent in the Sassuolo academy and has already made 98 career appearances from loan spells in Serie C over the last three seasons.
Born in Castelnovo ne’ Monti in the province of Reggio Emilia, Mercati grew up in the academy of nearby Sassuolo, passing through the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Primavera teams. Mercati signed his first professional contract in May 2020 and was selected by Roberto De Zerbi to make his first appearance on the bench for the senior team for a Serie A match against Fiorentina in July 2020 at the age of 18.
After a stellar season with the Primavera team in 2020/21, Mercati would earn his first professional experience on loan at Montevarchi, making 37 appearances with one goal and six assists in Serie C at the age of 19.
Mercati would have two further successful loans in Serie C in the last two seasons, making 25 appearances with two assists at Carrerese in 2022/23 and 36 appearances with two goals and three assists at Gubbio in 2023/24, which helped his teams finish fourth and fifth respectively and qualify for the promotion playoffs.
