TMW Radio
During the transfer market and retreats Daniele Garbo spoke on TMW Radio. These are his words:
What kind of Olympics were the Paris Olympics?
“Definitely a positive balance, two more golds than in Tokyo and 40 medals in total. Ninth in the medal table and ahead of Germany, this is no small thing. Some of the highlights from Tokyo were missing, such as the gold of Jacobs and Tamberi, but other fantastic victories arrived, such as yesterday’s by the Italian volleyball team, who lost only one set playing wonderful volleyball. The credit goes to the girls, but also a lot to Velasco, who was able to put a team back in order, making it a winner”.
How should we analyze the trend of Italian football that goes against the trend of other sports?
“I don’t think soccer is an Olympic sport. I don’t understand why NBA top players can play in basketball and under-23s play in soccer. I think soccer is not very Olympic in terms of the spirit of the players. The Olympics are something else, we get excited about sports that we discover every four years. Swimming has done something extraordinary, two gold medals are important and confirm a movement that is constantly growing”.
What does Napoli’s victory in the Coppa Italia leave behind?
“Napoli is a work in progress, the squad is not complete with a player like Osimhen who lives separated at home. Conte is not happy, he is having a lot of problems and in a week the championship starts without the centre forward. We have never seen a situation with so many teams that have to complete the transfer campaign a week before the championship”.
What can we expect from Atalanta in the Super Cup?
“Atalanta’s pre-season has been quite disappointing, they’ve been hit left and right. We all thought they could be one of the big protagonists of the championship but I have some doubts. I wouldn’t want there to be a rejection crisis after the extraordinary season they had a year ago. Let’s hope they’re not satisfied, Retegui isn’t worth Scamacca to me and the real problem is Koopmeiners. I have a lot of doubts about this Atalanta, at full strength they could have played the Super Cup with ease, in these conditions I don’t know how they can present themselves”.
How much further ahead is Inter than the others?
“He has changed little or nothing, he has brought in important players like Taremi and Zielinski, he plays by heart and I think he is still the team to beat. He is the only one who is already complete, the others have many things to fix, Milan has done well in friendlies but the championship is another thing. The gap has absurdly widened and Inter seems to me to be a very calm team and of a higher level than all the others”.
How do you see the Romans and Fiorentina?
“It’s hard to say what level they are at, pre-season is one thing and the championship is another. Maybe Fiorentina is the closest to completing the squad, Roma and Lazio need to complete. Lazio then changed coach, Baroni is very good but it’s one thing to coach Verona and another to coach Lazio. At Roma there’s this bomb Dybala, without him he would lose a lot from a technical point of view. A week from the start of the championship I see little except Inter”.
What are your impressions of the Italian movement in European cups?
“I have the feeling that the European Championships have given us back the true dimension of Italian football. Our championship will show its limits, the matches are often boring and slow, Inter can go further in theory, they must try to demonstrate an international dimension as they did two years ago, I expect something at a European level. The rest is a big unknown and I think we will pay even more heavily for this crisis of Italian football”.
