Few would have expected such an impact on Serie A. Instead, Marcus Thuram did very well, overturning all the canons of free transfers. In his ideas he was supposed to replace Lukaku, in reality he was essential even if perhaps he freed Lautaro from a more subordinate role. Strong, fast, good in front of goal, a tireless worker for the team, Thuram started well with his 13 goals in his first season in Serie A, recommended by his father – like Khephren, who ended up at Juventus – and always present for Simone Inzaghi.
This season, perhaps, he will be asked to improve in terms of goalscoring, not so much in the league as in the Champions League. Eight appearances and only one goal, for a team that went out in the round of 16 against Atletico Madrid, probably not the most difficult opponent to face in that round. A disappointment for those who the year before had reached the final act, in Istanbul, losing it against Manchester City due to a “save” by Lukaku on a shot by Dimarco.
There is time to try again. Thuram would be the only upheaval in the squad, should a large offer arrive, between 70 and 80 million euros. Otherwise the future, at least for this season, is already written. Today Marcus Thuram turns 27.
