John Heitinga has effectively joined Arne Slot’s staff as assistant coach. The announcement was made by Liverpoolwith a note on their official website that was not taken very well by everyone given that the former defender wore the Everton shirt in his career, historic rivals of the Reds. “John Heitinga has been appointed as an assistant coach to the Liverpool coaching staff. The 40-year-old is the latest addition to Arne Slot’s staff ahead of the start of the 2024-25 season. Heitinga made a name for himself as a central defender during his playing career, earning 87 caps for the Netherlands and representing Ajax, Atlético Madrid, Everton, Fulham and Hertha BSC before hanging up his boots in 2016. He subsequently moved into coaching, working with various Ajax youth teams before taking charge of the Amsterdam club’s first team between January and June 2023. Most recently, Heitinga served as assistant coach of West Ham United’s first team last season. He now joins Slot’s squad to help Liverpool prepare for next season.”
