English Openings – Euro Fatal, Southgate Divorces from National Team: FA on the Hunt for Replacement

Gareth Southgate has decided: he will no longer be the England national team coach. The announcement of his resignation came yesterday, following the second failed European Championship final against Spain in Berlin last Sunday. “I’ll take my coat”, he figuratively titles Star Sports: after eight years, Southgate’s adventure at the helm of the Three Lions has come to an end.

Southgate was promoted to coach to replace the resigning Allardyce in November 2016. From there, a fourth place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, then another final lost at the 2021 European Championship against Roberto Mancini’s Italy. Meanwhile, the English Football Association is thinking about who can take Southgate’s place.
