Holland, Koeman against VAR: “This is how it destroys football. Dumfries-Kane? Just one touch”

The Holland coach Ronald Koeman he doesn’t agree: his Holland was eliminated from Euro 2024 also because of the 1-1 draw conceded on a penalty kick, in a highly contested action due to the alleged foul by Inter winger Denzel Dumfries on a shot by Harry Kane. Kane himself then converted the penalty to put his team back on track, with the comeback completed in the ninetieth minute by Ollie Watkins..

A decision, that of referee Felix Zwayer, that infuriated many in the Netherlands, including Koeman: “In my opinion the penalty should not have been awarded, Kane kicked it and Dumfries’ boots touched. I think this use of VAR really destroys football. In the end we had the feeling of being the best team on the pitch”.

Dumfries himself actually admitted his own faults: “Losing like this is even worse. If the game had gone to extra time, I had the feeling that we could have won” – Denzel said – “I already had that feeling for the whole second half. The penalty? I tried to block the ball, but I hit Kane. There was contact. I take full responsibility for the foul but we have to move on”.
