Germany were eliminated from the European Championship at home, after a match, the one lost 2-1 against Spain at the end of 120 fiery minutes, which saw the Germans complain about some decisions taken by referee Taylor, with Julien Nagelsmann finally invading Taylor’s dressing room.
The German coach was clearly emotional at the end of the match, explaining: “It’s not an everyday thing to see players leave the retreat in tears, I think it’s a great victory for the entire staff. I can’t hold back the tears because it was all very emotional. For this country I hope that we can improve together because things are better this way than alone, there are more important things than football but we managed to unite people”.
The German coach then continued to talk about the disputed episode in the match, with Cucurella hitting the ball with his arm out wide and therefore not close to his body, which was not sanctioned with a penalty in extra time: “I don’t want to complain, or use this space to find justifications, but regardless of us or what happened, even for all other competitions or tournaments it would be nice if these situations could be evaluated objectively, like in other sports. Jamal shoots, Cucurella intercepts involuntarily with his hand, a direct shot on goal, there must be another yardstick and clearer rules are needed”.
