THE Three Lions They finished top of Group C at the European Championships in Germany, but scored only two goals in three games. A sterility in the goal areaas well as for the game played, which has brought Southgate and his players to the gallows of the most ferocious critics and commentators. But a victory in Gelsenkirchen today would be a very strong signal from the English national team and would give life to the quarter-final against Swiss.

Southgate’s words. “It could be another brilliant evening to create more memories for our fans,” she said. “I’ve played in a semi-final of a major tournament and I’ve managed a semi-final and a final. Tomorrow is about moving the team forward. We shouldn’t be afraid of losing, it’s about opportunities. We’re trying to achieve something which is a challenge.” And on heavy defeats suffered in history of the national team, most recently in the final against Italy at the last European Championship at Wembley: “We have already lost matches in the past, life goes on. At that point, when you can handle the worst, you are free to try to go and win the match”.
