An Italy defensively similar to the last Milan: Fonseca will have to do better than Pioli (and Spalletti)

The national team seen last night against Spain will have given the impression to many experts and fans of having been, especially in the defensive aspect, very very similar to Stefano Pioli’s Milan of the last two years. Beyond the 1-0 defeat on an own goal, Spalletti’s Azzurri suffered a lot against the Spanish, almost never managing to put up adequate resistance except thanks to Donnarumma’s saves.

The tactical aspect
In particular, reminiscent of the last AC Milan, were the chasms between midfield and defense left by the Azzurri just as happened many times when watching the Rossoneri play: wrong times of pressure, too many players attracted by the ball, an opponent between the lines who receives ball and field wide open. The new AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca, therefore, will absolutely have to learn from those mistakes (perhaps also looking at Spalletti’s Italy) to put a stop to these chasms.

The new midfielder
Not just with the coach. The management, precisely to help the team’s defensive maneuver, will look on the market for a midfielder with more defensive characteristics than those currently present in the squad. At the moment, the two main names in Moncada and Ibrahimovic’s notebooks are Youssouf Fofana, a Frenchman born in 1999 who plays for Monaco, and Mats Wieffer, a 24-year-old from Feyenoord; two midfielders with different characteristics, but who have excellent numbers and who could help Fonseca in not making the same mistakes as Pioli and Spalletti.
