Atletico pushes Saul out: the midfielder would like to stay but the message is clear

The future of Saul Niguez he will be away from Atlético Madrid. Both the management and Diego Simeone have already informed the player that he is not part of the plans for the 2024/25 season; the midfielder was on holiday outside Spain for a few days but he has already returned and is looking for a new team. The message is clear: he will not be able to stay.

Atletico needs to sell players to make a transfer market and lower the salary cap. Saúl has a very high salary – he earns around 15 million euros gross per year – and his departure, as well as that of Savic and Hermoso, is essential for the colchoneros to program. The 29-year-old has a contract until 2026 and his intention was to continue in the team where he grew up and achieved his greatest successes as a professional, but this will not be the case.

Saúl played 427 games for Atlético, scoring 48 goals and 19 assists. Since his debut in March 2012, he has won a championship, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup, two Europa Leagues and a European Super Cup. He is the seventh most capped player in the club’s history, a player whose importance has however decreased season after season, even if in the end he has always played a lot: 49 official matches in all competitions in 2023/24, with two goals and 5 assists to his name.
