Ten Hag reveals: ‘Manchester United spoke to other managers while I was in charge’

This week, while on holiday, it was communicated to Erik ten Hag that he would be allowed to remain at Manchester United: “The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up at my door and told me they wanted to continue with me.” It wasn’t a certainty after a difficult season, albeit the FA Cup triumph against Manchester City.

Shocking backstory. In all of this however, the bench of Red Devils it was very hot and the Dutch coach himself admitted to some conversations between the English club and candidates for the new manager. “They actually told me they talked to several executives,” agrees Ten Hag. “In the Netherlands, this is not even allowed. Then it is forbidden to talk to other coaches when there is still a coach in charge,” he told NOS Studio Voetbal.

But now it’s certain: the future of Ten Hag is at Old Trafford. “We had good talks, various topics were discussed. The conclusion is that we will continue to work together and that they will extend my contract. We still have to agree on this”, said the 54-year-old coach who currently has a contract valid until the summer of 2025, with an option for an additional season.
