European, 4K or HD? Rai announces the first, but then the matches are seen with the second

HD or 4K? For many viewers it won’t be a big difference, especially in the streaming era, but on a technical level we’re not talking about a small aspect. We talk about European Championships 2024which reports dday.itthe IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) website, had revealed how, contrary to what was announced, they would no longer be produced in 4K but only in HD HDR.

There Rai has decided to continue promoting the broadcast of the European Championship matches in 4K on its channels. A part of the public chose to follow the event in this resolution, tuning in to Rai 4K in the hope of enjoying high quality images. However, when connecting, the Rai 4K channel logo suddenly transformed into Rai 1 HD.

The reality is that the matches are broadcast in rescaled HD, offering less than exemplary visual quality. Although the perception is slightly better than what was broadcast on Rai 1 HD, this is due more to the defects of the latter than to the merits of the alleged 4K. During night matches, HDR isn’t entirely convincing: images appear overly contrasty, with Germany’s white shirts too bright and dark areas too gloomy.

Initially, Rai had attempted to provide a more realistic indication, but after the first match it backtracked, restoring the Rai 4K logo as an overlay on the European Championship matches. These matches are not actually broadcast in 4K, but rather rescaled to this resolution from Full HD, as has already happened on other similar occasions.
