Gianni Comandini, the hero of a derby won 0-6 by Milan. And then the outbreak in a few years

If a good morning starts in the morning, for Gianni Comandini it could have been the dawn of a long and prosperous career. This was not the case, of course. It was May 2001 and there was the derby, Inter-Milan. On the pitch there are players like Shevchenko and Maldini, Serginho and Gattuso for the Rossoneri, while the Nerazzurri can count on Vieri and Recoba, Zanetti and Blanc. On the bench – and who will then make the journey from one Naviglio to the other – there is a Clarence Seedorf forced to see the Dalmat-Di Biagio-Farinos midfield suffocate and sink under the blows of the opponents.

And there is, indeed, Comandini. B’s best scorer, the year before, with a Vicenza dragged to Serie A after an unfortunate relegation. In the previous summer it had been purchased for twenty billion lire, a high figure for those who thought they had got the new Filippo Inzaghi. So, after Comandini they decided to focus on the real one, perhaps with a little more satisfaction. In any case, that derby is history: 0-6 final, a brace from the former Vicenza player who seems to be on the launching pad for a dazzling career.

A goal also in the Champions League, against Dinamo Zagreb, but at the end of the season he had made 18 appearances and 3 goals. A little short on reconfirmation. Also because then president Ruggeri’s Atalanta arrives, who wants Europe for his creation. 30 billion spent, almost always a starter, four goals. Then a long decline and his retirement at 29: 234 appearances and 70 goals, in the last five seasons of his career he scored only 15. Sad, lonely and final. Today Gianni Comandini turns 47.
