6 May 1956, Fiorentina champions of Italy for the first time in history: 1-1 in Trieste is enough

Sixty-eight years ago Fiorentina became Italian champions for the first time in their history. The team coached by Fulvio Bernardini was 11 points ahead of second-placed Milan with 6 matchdays to go. At that time in Serie A two points were awarded for each victory, one point for each draw and 0 points for each defeat. Consequently, with the same result as the Rossoneri, the Viola would have kept the gap unchanged and would have mathematically become unreachable for their rivals.

The objective was victory so as not to have to listen to the radio and see the result of the Devil, playing at Juventus. That day’s opponent was there Triestina of Pietro Pasinati, who was still a tough rival at Nereo Rocco. In the 42nd minute, however, it was the guests who broke the deadlock with Julinho’s goal, which made all the fans of the Giglia team explode. A joy that didn’t last long because in the 44th minute Brighenti immediately re-established parity. In the second half nothing happened and the score did not change until the final whistle from referee Mario Maurelli. However, fate wanted the Milan it didn’t go beyond a 0-0 draw against the Juventus and therefore it was a great celebration for the Florentine. Below are the lineups for that match:

Triestina: Nuciari, Claut, Toso, Bernardin, Petagna, Szoke, Dorigo, Passarin, Renosto, Zaro, Brighenti. Trainer: Pasinati.

Florentine: Sarti, Magnini, Cervato, Mazza, Chiappella, Orzan, Scaramucci, Segato, Gratton, Julinho, Virgili. Trainer: Bernardini.
